Imphal: Nearly three years after ethnic violence first erupted in Manipur, the scale of the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold, with official figures revealing that 58,821 people have been displaced since May 3, 2023.

The data, released by the Home Department Secretariat on April 20 in response to an RTI query, highlights the prolonged impact of the conflict that began between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki community.

According to the government, at least 217 people have lost their lives in the violence, based on ex-gratia payments made to the next of kin.

The number of those injured has not been separately detailed in the response.

Relief and rehabilitation efforts remain ongoing. As of March 10, 2026, a total of 174 relief camps were operational across the state, sheltering thousands of internally displaced persons.

In addition, around 3,000 prefabricated houses have been constructed by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd. to provide temporary accommodation.

The destruction of property has also been extensive, a report said.

The Home Department reported that 7,894 houses were completely destroyed, while another 2,646 suffered partial damage during the course of the violence.

The information was accessed through a Right to Information application filed by Congress leader Hareshwar Goshwami, who later stated in a social media post that it took him "seven months of effort" to obtain the data on internally displaced persons.

The ethnic clashes, which broke out in May 2023, have since evolved into one of the most severe internal conflicts in the state in recent years, with displacement, loss of life and destruction continuing to shape the crisis.
