It categorically denied the allegations and urged citizens to verify information before sharing it.

Cautioning against the dangers of misinformation, the government said the spread of unverified claims could further aggravate the situation and disrupt public order.

It appealed to people to act responsibly, emphasising the need for calm, clarity and fact-checking, particularly during sensitive times.

The statement also reminded the public that under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, spreading false information or inciting unrest is a punishable offence.

Separately, the Manipur Police also refuted reports that security forces had opened fire on protesters, allegedly killing two persons and injuring several others.
