Chandame Sungoh, chairman of the Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBARF), has raised concerns over alleged attempts to involve members of the Khasi-Pnar community in election campaigning across Assam, warning that such actions could complicate the sensitive interstate boundary issue.
Sungoh claimed that individuals from the community are being mobilised to canvass for various political parties, including the Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and National People's Party.
He cautioned that this could influence residents in disputed areas to participate in Assam's electoral process, potentially weakening the collective stance taken by local communities.
Referring to past deliberations, Sungoh said a series of resolutions adopted over the years had called for disengagement from Assam's electoral activities.
He pointed to meetings held in Mukroh in April 2021, followed by reaffirmations in May 2025, and a subsequent gathering in Barato in February 2026, where a decision was taken to boycott the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
A follow-up meeting in early March this year also reiterated the same position.
Despite these resolutions, Sungoh alleged that certain individuals continue to encourage participation by offering assurances of development.
He further claimed that such efforts are aimed at reinforcing Assam's position over disputed regions, particularly Block I and Block II.
