Aizawl: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Northeast, the Mizoram government on Wednesday introduced a mobile application named 'Khuarel' in partnership with a private firm to improve real-time sharing of disaster-related information, officials said.
Launching the app, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma said 'Khuarel'-a Mizo term meaning nature-has been developed to ensure quick communication and smooth exchange of information between the public, the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, and both state and district disaster management authorities during emergencies.
He added that the platform also enables proper recording and management of disaster-related data, helping authorities track incidents more efficiently and respond effectively.
The minister appreciated the collaborative effort between the department and the private firm, calling the launch a major step forward for the state.
He pointed out that Mizoram is among the first states in the Northeast to roll out such a system and encouraged people to download and use the app, highlighting its user-friendly design and practical usefulness.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, Udit Prakash Rai, explained the key features of the application.
He said the app allows citizens to report disaster incidents instantly to the department and the District Disaster Management Authorities.
Besides, authorities can quickly share important alerts and updates with the public through the Khuarel app.
He added that the application is expected to boost disaster response capabilities and improve coordination among districts and various government departments across Mizoram.
