The Northeast Frontier Railway has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to introduce advanced technology aimed at strengthening railway safety and monitoring track conditions more effectively.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will work on deploying a modern camera-based system integrated with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors and GPS technology.
This setup is designed to provide continuous, high-precision monitoring of railway tracks, enabling authorities to detect potential issues at an early stage.
Officials said the system is built as a plug-and-play solution, allowing it to be installed across locomotives and coaches without requiring significant structural modifications.
It uses event-based camera technology to capture and analyse track irregularities in real time, generating instant alerts for swift corrective action.
The collaboration is expected to tap into IIT Guwahati's research capabilities to create a scalable and cost-efficient model for railway safety.
By enabling predictive and condition-based maintenance, the system aims to reduce reliance on manual inspections and minimise the risk of unexpected failures.
Authorities believe the initiative will enhance operational efficiency and reliability while improving passenger safety.
It also aligns with broader efforts to adopt data-driven and technology-led approaches in managing railway infrastructure.
