Siikhe Lake in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Subansiri has once again highlighted its ecological importance, with more than 100 birds from nine different species recorded at the site over the past week.
The recent observation documented species such as mallard duck, northern shoveler, Eurasian wigeon and others, reaffirming its significance as a thriving habitat for rich avian diversity.
Experts believe additional species are likely to arrive in the coming weeks as migration patterns continue.
The sightings were recorded by Divisional Forest Officer Tilling Taker, Range Forest Officer Kago Oniya, and birder and wildlife filmmaker Millo Tako.
Located around 12 km from the district headquarters in Arunachal Pradesh, Siikhe Lake is an artificial water body developed under the initiative of former minister Tage Taki. Originally a wetland paddy field, the area was transformed into a lake primarily to support groundwater recharge.
Over the years, the lake has grown into a key habitat for both migratory and resident bird species. Every year, more than 15 species of birds have been recorded here, including the iconic Mandarin Duck, which has attracted significant attention from birdwatchers and conservationists.
Monitoring of bird migration and waterbird population counts has been carried out since 2019 by a team from Ziro Birds Walk. The activity takes place during the peak migration period from November to May, with support from the Siikhe Multipurpose Society, which manages the lake.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein welcomed the findings and remarked, "Encouraging to see Siikhe Lake in Lower Subansiri emerge as a vibrant haven for avian life, with over 100 birds across 9 species recorded in just a week. Such observations highlight the importance of preserving our natural habitats and strengthening conservation efforts. The Government remains committed to protecting Arunachal Pradesh's unique biodiversity while promoting sustainable coexistence with nature."
