Pawan Khera drops bombshell on Assam CM's family: Multiple citizenship, Dubai assets in spotlight

North East News 2 months ago

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera has made a series of serious allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters on Sunday, Khera claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds active passports from three countries - Egypt, the UAE, and Antigua & Barbuda, raising concerns over possible dual or multiple citizenships, which is prohibited under Indian law.

"How can a citizen of India hold passports from three different countries? The government must clarify this immediately," he said.

The senior Congress leader further alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma owns properties in Dubai that were not disclosed in the CM's election affidavit. According to Khera, one of the properties is linked to the M Group, and another is registered under Riniki Bhuyan Sarma's name. He questioned why the Assam CM did not reveal these assets during the nomination process.

Additionally, he further referred to a company named Asset Collective LLC, reportedly registered in Wyoming in the United States, alleging that Himanta Biswa Sarma and his son are associated as partners. He claimed the company has a budget of approximately Rs 52,000 crore.

He described a UAE Golden Card purportedly issued in Abu Dhabi on 14 March 2022, an Antigua and Barbuda passport allegedly issued on 26 August 2021, and an Egyptian passport reportedly issued on 13 February 2022.

Meanwhile, CM Sarma has strongly refuted allegations made by Pawan Khera, calling them "malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated".

Responding to the claims, Sarma said the remarks reflect "deep frustration and panic within the Congress party".

In a post on X, he wrote, "Today's press conference by Pawan Khera reflects the deep frustration and panic within the Congress party. As Assam moves decisively towards a historic mandate, such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their sinking ground."

He said that he and his wife will file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera.

"I categorically reject every allegation made by him. These are malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam. My wife and I will be filing both criminal and civil defamation cases within the next 48 hours against Shri Pawan Khera. He will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements," the Chief Minister added.

Expressing confidence in the judiciary, the CM Sarma said the truth would prevail in court and Khera would be held accountable. He added that the people of Assam "will not be misled by such propaganda".
