In a major relief for farmers in Arunachal Pradesh, the Central government has approved the state's entire requirement of 950 metric tonnes (MT) of urea for April.
The decision comes after a high-level meting chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday in hbrid mode, where Arunachal's Agriculture minister Gabriel D. Wangsu raised the issue.
Prior to the revision, the state had been allocated a mere 100 MT through IFFCO for the month. That figure itself included a carrier-over demand of 700 MT from March arising from previous supply shortfalls that had already strained agricultural operations.
During the conference, Wangsu highlighted that Arunachal Pradesh, despite being among the country's lowest fertiliser-consuming states, has frequently received less than its assessed urea requirement.
He also flagged that the shortfall comes at a critical time, with the expansion of oil palm and tea cultivation driving up fertiliser demand. Any disruption in supply, he warned, could delay plantation activities and adversely affect farmers' incomes.
In a social media post on Thursday, Wangsu expressed gratitude to the Union Agriculture Minister for the timely approval and said the decision would ensure uninterrupted fertiliser availability during the peak cropping season and safeguard farmers' interests.

The post read, "DEEPLY grateful to Shivraj Singh Chouhan ji, Hon'ble Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, for his prompt response to our request to enhance urea allocation from the initial 100 MT to state's full requirement of 950 MT, following our interaction during yesterday's virtual conference."
"Against our state's growing fertilizer demand, including a carry-over requirement of 700 MT from March, we had initially received only 100 MT. This enhanced allocation will ensure that our expanding tea and oil palm sectors are not hit by shortages. This timely intervention of the Union Ministry will ensure adequate and uninterrupted fertilizer availability to support our farmers for their seasonal activities without disruption, he added.
