Assam Police has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manasjyoti Chetia and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
An order issued by the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Sivasagar, on August 26, 2026, stated that the SIT was constituted to ensure the "proper and scientific investigation" of Bihubar Police Station Case No. 10/2026.
The case has been registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The SIT was formed by Sivasagar Police and will be headed by Sivasagar Deputy Superintendent of Police Lila Bora.
Other members include Amguri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mridul Hazarika and Nazira Police Station Second Officer SI (UB) Siraj Saikia, and Nazira Police Station WSI (UB) Sumi Barman.
Siraj Saikia has been appointed as the investigating officer in the case.
The SIT will examine the circumstances that led to Chetia's death and look into the allegations mentioned in the complaint filed in connection with the case. It will also assess available evidence and establish the sequence of events.
Meanwhile, the police have detained five individuals named in the complaint lodged by the Bir Lachit Sena in connection with the case.
As per reports, the five persons are Abidur Rahman, Subera Begum, Selimur Rahman, Selima Begum, and Anowara Begum.
They were reportedly detained for questioning from Bihubar and Simaluguri railway station, and currently undergoing intensive interrogation by Sivasagar Police.
Manasjyoti Chetia was found critically injured beside a road in the Birubor area of Sivasagar on August 23.
He was subsequently taken to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he succumbed to his injuries on August 25.
The post-mortem examination reportedly found multiple injuries, including severe injuries to the back of his head.
