Dibrugarh: Assam Police have arrested three youths for allegedly attempting to extort money from individuals by posing as members of the banned insurgent outfit ULFA(I), officials said on Sunday.
The arrests were made after Dibrugarh Police received information about extortion calls and text messages sent to a doctor, demanding a large sum of money.
Acting swiftly, a police team led by DSP (Headquarters) Nayan Moni Barua launched an operation to trace those involved.
During the investigation, police identified the three accused, who allegedly sent threatening SMS messages and delivered an extortion letter in the name of ULFA(I), demanding Rs 60 lakh from the victim.
Preliminary findings suggest that the accused may have been involved in similar extortion attempts targeting multiple individuals across Upper Assam, particularly in Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts.
Police said all three have been taken into custody at Moran Police Station, where they are being interrogated further as part of the ongoing investigation.
