Thunderstorm hits Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills; 76 affected, houses damaged

Ampati: A sudden and severe thunderstorm lashed parts of Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills on Sunday night, causing widespread damage across several villages and affecting at least 76 people.

However, no casualties or injuries have been reported.

Officials from the Deputy Commissioner's office said the worst-hit areas were the C&RD Blocks of Rerapara, Zikzak and Purakhasia, which experienced strong winds and heavy thunderstorm activity.

Rerapara emerged as the most affected block among these, with 36 people impacted across five villages. Several houses sustained damage, including four that were partially damaged and one completely destroyed.

In Zikzak block, 28 residents were affected, with five houses partially damaged across three villages. In Purakhasia, 12 people were affected, and two houses were partially damaged across two villages.

Overall, the storm damaged 12 houses, 11 partially and one completely, across 10 villages in the district, underscoring the widespread impact of the storm.

The thunderstorm also disrupted key infrastructure. A solar panel at Mellim Primary Health Centre was dislodged, power lines were damaged, and the approach road to the Deputy Commissioner's office was affected.

Authorities responded promptly, restoring power supply shortly after the incident. Officials said damage assessments are ongoing, with restoration and relief measures being initiated on priority.

The administration continues to monitor the situation closely as efforts intensify to assist affected families and restore normalcy in the impacted areas.
