Assam: Chandmari flyover lanes closed, Guwahati faces severe traffic chaos

Guwahati:Guwahati city faced severe traffic disruptions on Thursday after both lanes of the Chandmari flyover were suddenly shut, as the MRD Road flyover project is still under construction.

Commuters were taken by surprise, as there was no prior public notice, highlighting serious gaps in planning and coordination between the Public Works Department (PWD), the contractor, and the traffic police.

Although one lane had been partially shut for the past two weeks to connect the new flyover with the existing structure, the unexpected shutdown of both lanes triggered severe delays and confusion for commuters, office-workers, and local residents.

Cars, buses, and other vehicles traveling from RG Baruah Road were rerouted to the already congested Rajgarh Road.

Traffic coming from Silpukhuri towards RG Baruah Road was rerouted through residential areas like Bamunimaidam Colony, turning normally quiet streets into jammed roads.

Traffic from RG Baruah Road was later diverted to Zoo-Narengi Road, forcing Chandmari-bound vehicles to take Railway Colony Road, creating heavy congestion on the narrow connecting stretch.

Repeated stoppages at the nearby railway crossing added to the congestion, turning the area into a traffic nightmare, according to residents.

Local residents and urban planners criticized the contractor for ignoring basic safety rules, while traffic police struggled to control the traffic jam.

A traffic officer expressed the challenges faced by the authorities: "Managing this situation every day has become nearly impossible. Without proper planning and enough traffic staff, the roads quickly descend into disorder," he said.

Commuters shared their frustration over the daily chaos. One said, "How long will we remain stuck like this? It has become part of our daily routine, and we are exhausted and frustrated."

Another commuter added, "No signs, no staff, no warnings, just constant gridlock. It feels like the authorities don't care about commuters."

"With no alerts or guidance, getting around has become pure chaos. We spend hours barely moving a few meters," said another commuter.

"Dust pollution from the construction site is unbearable. It reduces visibility, makes breathing difficult, and turns our streets into a mess. Soon, Guwahati will compete with Delhi in terms of air quality index," said a local resident.

"This is the result of poor planning. We are simply being harassed in the name of development, with no consideration for our daily lives or safety," another resident said.

Residents of Rajgarh complained that the narrow lanes are overwhelmed with traffic, and dust from the construction site is causing serious problems. One resident said, "We are losing the beauty of the city and witnessing significant environmental degradation."

Authorities have instructed city buses to stay in the left lane, avoid overtaking, and follow proper lane order to ease congestion in Chandmari.

Officials also urged the public to cooperate to ensure road safety and smooth progress of the flyover construction.
