Doomdooma:Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam Cabinet Minister Rupesh Gowala won the 2026 Assam Assembly elections from the Doomdooma constituency, polling 86,009 votes, nearly 70.79% of the total valid votes.

This marks an increase from his 2021 tally of 49,119 votes. Gowala defeated Congress candidate Durga Bhumij, who received 30,627 votes, by a margin of 55,382 votes.

NOTA accounted for 4,864 votes. The results were declared after the completion of all 21 EVM rounds on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The result shows support among tea tribe and Adivasi communities in this tea garden-dominated seat in upper Assam's Tinsukia district.

Political analysts attribute the outcome to Gowala's performance as a minister handling Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare, Prisons, Home Guards, and Civil Defence, along with the NDA government's focus on development and welfare schemes.

Voter turnout remained steady during the April 9 polling. Gowala's win further strengthens the BJP's position in the region.

The re-elected MLA is expected to prioritise local issues, including infrastructure, livelihoods in the tea sector, and flood and river erosion challenges in the coming term.

"There are no shoes or even hawai chappals on the feet of school-going children. Hospitals are full of chaos and disorder, and people have no jobs, sitting at home in depression. I hope these problems will be solved," said Rumoni Munda, a local teacher.
