Guwahati: Almost all major Opposition leaders in Assam, including Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jagadish Bhuyan, and Rajen Gohain, were trailing in their respective constituencies, according to data released by the Election Commission of India on Monday (May 4, 2026).
Congress president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing by 19,626 votes in the Jorhat Assembly constituency. He secured 43,882 votes, while his BJP opponent Hitendra Nath Goswami polled 63,508 votes.
Congress leader Debabrata Saikia was trailing by 22,187 votes in the Nazira seat in Sivasagar district. BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain had secured 47,332 votes after the eighth round of counting, compared to Saikia's 25,145 votes.
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi was also trailing his nearest BJP rival. Gogoi secured 38,403 votes after the tenth round, while BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi received 47,078 votes.
AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan was trailing by 19,376 votes in the Sadiya constituency after the ninth round. He polled 25,964 votes against BJP's Bolin Chetia, who secured 45,340 votes.
Former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, who joined the AJP ahead of the polls, was trailing BJP MLA Jitu Goswami. Gohain had secured 26,759 votes, while Goswami led with 35,315 votes at the end of the seventh round of counting.
