Assam Elections 2026: Congress candidate Bidisha Neog lodges FIR over 'brutal attack' on convoy by BJP workers

NORTHEAST NOW 1 week ago

Guwahati: Congress candidate from Jalukbari, Bidisha Neog, has lodged an FIR at Jalukbari Police Station alleging multiple attacks on her campaign convoy by BJP workers along the Maligaon-Pandu stretch on April 1.

In her complaint, Neog stated that she had obtained all necessary permissions for campaigning and was travelling with her team from Borjhar via Azara towards Maligaon. However, she alleged that her convoy was stopped at Pandu by a group of BJP workers stationed at a temporary roadside office, where they were prevented from proceeding, verbally abused, and threatened.

Attempting to avoid escalation, Neog said her team altered their route. She alleged, however, that the same group intercepted the convoy again at several points, including near Pandu College Gate and Aruna Cinema Hall. The attackers, she claimed, were carrying BJP flags and raising slogans in the name of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while launching repeated assaults.

According to the FIR, several of her supporters, including women and elderly members, were attacked with sticks, rods and other objects. Multiple vehicles in the convoy were vandalised, with shattered glass and significant damage reported. Bike riders accompanying the convoy were also targeted, forcing some to abandon their vehicles and flee.

Neog further alleged that she was physically assaulted and sustained injuries, while her husband and several party workers were seriously hurt. She also claimed that women in her team were harassed during the incident, with some alleging that their clothes were torn.

The Congress candidate stated that the attackers issued death threats, allegedly shouting threats to kill her and her supporters during the violence.

She also alleged that despite the presence of police personnel, the situation was not effectively controlled, with the attackers at one point outnumbering the police. Following the incident, Neog and her team sought medical treatment at Central Hospital.

In her complaint, Neog said the entire sequence of events was recorded on video and that she is prepared to submit the footage as evidence. She has urged the police to identify those involved, take stringent legal action, and ensure adequate protection for her and her party workers.

She also called on authorities to examine CCTV footage from the area and investigate individuals allegedly operating from a temporary roadside office along the Adabari-Pandu road, which she claims served as the base for the attackers.
