Assam: Girijananda Chowdhury University hosts international conference on Indian Knowledge Systems

Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) hosted a two-day international conference on January 22 and 23, 2026, bringing together scholars and academicians from India and abroad to deliberate on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and their interface with global knowledge traditions.

The conference, titled "Bridging Sacred Wisdom and Scientific Vision: Re-envisioning Knowledge Discourses from Global Perspectives with emphasis on the Indian Knowledge Systems," was attended by representatives from academic institutions in India and Russia. Amarendra Kumar Das, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, attended as the Chief Guest, while Ekaterina Tyurina, Vice Consul at the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata, was the Guest of Honour.

The event was organised in collaboration with several Russian institutions, including the Centre for South Asian Studies at the Russian State University for the Humanities, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, and Mari State University.

The conference opened with an inaugural session addressed by Jasodaranjan Das, President of the SSA Society. Jayanta Deka, Chancellor of GCU, and Kandarpa Das, Vice-Chancellor of the university, outlined the institution's academic vision and emphasis on international collaboration. The keynote address was delivered by Alexander Stolyarov, Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies at the Russian State University for the Humanities, who spoke on the historical and contemporary relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems.

Plenary sessions on the first day featured presentations by scholars including Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, a scholar of Sankaradeva studies, Sidharth Shankar, former Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Ziro, Aditya Kiran Kakoti of Leiden University, the Netherlands, and Andrey Konkov of Sirius University, Russia.

The second day saw parallel academic sessions held in a hybrid format, covering themes such as Indian culture and civilisation, Vedic science, and traditional medicine-based approaches to research and innovation.

University officials said the conference aimed to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthen academic collaboration between Indian and international institutions.
