Guwahati: Author, lawyer, and speaker Kartikeya Vajpai launched his novel The Unbecoming: Let Life Reveal Its Purpose at the Gauhati Press Club on Wednesday.

This was the book's first launch in Northeast India. The event was attended by journalists, students, teachers, and members of the local literary community.

Published by Penguin Random House India, the novel explores themes of identity, self-awareness, purpose, and the emotional struggles of modern life. It follows the journey of cricketer Siddharth and his mentor Ajay as they navigate questions of identity, expectations, and inner transformation.

The book also features forewords by the Dalai Lama and Swami Sarvapriyananda.

The launch went beyond a formal release, turning into a wider discussion on ambition, fear, validation, and the search for meaning in a fast-paced world.

Vajpai said many people live according to social expectations without questioning whether those identities truly reflect who they are. He added that storytelling can help people confront difficult truths in a simple and honest way.

Following the launch, Vajpai participated in an interactive discussion with senior journalist and Gauhati Press Club president Khagen Kalita. Kalita noted that in an era driven by speed and surface-level communication, books like The Unbecoming encourage deeper reflection.

He added that themes of identity and awareness are especially relevant for young people facing growing pressure.

Vajpai also spoke about the cultural and intellectual openness of the Northeast, saying it is well suited for meaningful literary engagement. He interacted with the audience on topics such as emotional resilience, life purpose, detachment, and rising mental health challenges among youth.

Attendees from media and literary circles described the session as engaging and relevant. The programme concluded with a question-and-answer session and a book signing.

As part of his visit, Vajpai also interacted with students in Guwahati through sessions organised by JCI India Zone 25 and at Modern English School, Kahilipara, where he discussed identity, purpose, emotional well-being, and perspectives on success beyond conventional definitions.
