"The river is no longer calm; it is eating away the land and bringing everything down with it," said a resident from a riverside village, pointing to fallen shrubs drifting downstream.

Swelling rivers, rapid erosion, and urban flooding have combined to damage homes, destroy crops, and paralyse daily life. The downpour, triggered by an active weather system, has led to muddy river waters carrying uprooted shrubs and eroded soil, signalling an alarming rise in riverbank degradation.

Local residents reported that nearby rivers turned visibly brown as strong currents eroded embankments and swept away vegetation.

Agricultural losses have mounted, particularly for banana cultivators whose plantations were flattened by strong winds and water accumulation. "Our entire crop was gone within hours. This was our only source of income," lamented a farmer, highlighting the economic blow to rural households.

Several houses, especially those built with temporary materials in low-lying areas, have suffered partial damage due to water ingress and soil erosion. In urban pockets and along highways, waterlogging has become a major concern, disrupting vehicular movement and isolating certain localities.

"Roads are submerged, and commuting has become risky," said a commuter stranded on a flooded stretch.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, though residents allege a delayed response in drainage clearance and erosion control measures. With rainfall continuing intermittently, fears of further deterioration remain high.

Experts warn that unless immediate mitigation steps are taken, including strengthening embankments and improving drainage systems, such extreme weather events could have long-term impacts on both infrastructure and livelihoods in the region.
