Assam: ULFA(I) recruitment racket busted; minor rescued
In a major breakthrough, the Indian Army troops in a joint operation with Assam Police busted a recruitment racket of the ULFA(I) and rescued a minor from Charaideo district of Upper Assam on Monday.
"Based on a specific input, the joint teams launched a well-coordinated operation spread over Charaideo and Dibrugarh districts of Assam," said Guwahati-based defence PRO Lt Col P. Khongsai.
"During the operation the teams apprehended one hardcore cadre and four over ground workers (OGWs) belonging to the proscribed group," the defence PRO further said .
The apprehended persons have been identified as SS Pvt Baldev Teli, an ULFA(I) cadre and Amit Bara, Sumit Baig, Azad Gohran and Vijay, all of who are overground workers of the militant outfit.
The apprehended persons were allegedly involved in a recruitment racket in the region.
The rescued minor, who was newly recruited, has been handed over to his parents in presence of villagers after counselling.
"The teams also recovered one 7.62 mm pistol, 2 rounds of ammunition, mobile phones and SIM cards," Khongsai said in a statement.
The parents appreciated the efforts of the security forces and expressed their gratitude for the compassion in the safe return of their ward.
The apprehended individuals and recovered items have been handed over to Assam Police for further investigations.
Last month, five hardcore and senior ULFA(I) cadres were apprehended along with huge arms and ammunition in Charaideo district of upper Assam.
Sources said ULFA(I) has engaged many overground workers for recruitment of boys into the outfit.
