Dibrugarh: A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her four-year-old daughter in Assam's Sivasagar district, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning at Khorahat Grant tea garden under Demow police station. According to police, the woman allegedly slit the child's throat with a sharp weapon before attempting to take her own life.

Family members said only the mother and daughter were present at home when the incident took place.

Both were rushed to a nearby government hospital with critical injuries, where doctors declared the child dead. The woman, who sustained severe injuries near her neck, was later referred to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where she is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and remains unconscious.

Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said police received information around noon, following which a team from Demow police station reached the spot.

"We have recovered a sharp weapon believed to have been used in the incident. It will be sent for forensic examination," she said.

The body of the child has been sent to AMCH for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered against the woman under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said further legal action will be taken once she recovers.

Family members said they were unaware of any reason behind the incident. Police added that the motive remains unclear and that statements of family members are being recorded.
