Guwahati: A dispute has erupted at a highway construction site in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley, where labourers from Assam have accused staff of Jhandu Infratech, a private firm contracted by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), of physical assault.
The incident allegedly took place at a project site in Hunli, where infrastructure work is currently underway under NHIDCL. The construction activity at the location is being carried out by Jhandu Infratech.
The situation reportedly began when a worker visited the company office to request an advance payment of Rs 10,000. He reportedly needed the amount urgently as his mother in Assam was facing a medical emergency.
However, the management allegedly refused to provide the requested advance.
Soon after the request was declined, an argument reportedly broke out at the office. During the confrontation, four to five individuals allegedly attacked the labourer.
Reports indicate that the worker sustained injuries to his head and ears in the assault.
The conflict did not stop there. When another labourer went to the office to ask why his colleague had been beaten, he was also allegedly assaulted.
Fellow workers claimed that the second victim suffered a serious head injury during the attack.
Amid the altercation, the workers' supervisor was also reportedly beaten by a group of four men.
A majority of the labourers employed at the project site are from Assam. Following the incident, they demanded justice and called for the immediate payment of their pending wages, saying their families depend on their daily income.
The injured workers have also appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to step in and address the issue.
Through their appeal, they urged the state government to examine the matter and ensure both their safety and the release of their dues.
So far, authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the allegations, while the workers continue to demand accountability and action against those involved.
