Beating the odds: How IIT scholars are securing their future.

NORTHEAST NOW 6 days ago

Overcoming Obstacles, Shaping Tomorrow: The Remarkable Paths of India's Resilient IIT Scholars. IIT Delhi is renowned for its rigorous academic environment.

Yet, for students like Sakshi Padir and Akhshitha Laxmi Devi Rathod, the real test extended far beyond the classroom; they had to manage the persistent, quiet strain of severe financial hardship.

Yuva Unstoppable, recognized as one of India's top 10 NGOs, acts as a vital bridge for students transitioning from economic adversity to professional achievement. Founded by Yale graduate Amitabh Shah-who famously left a Wall Street career to focus on grassroots social impact in India-the organization ensures that the nation's brightest minds are not forced to abandon their studies due to a lack of funds. To date, the Yuva Unstoppable scholarship initiative has enabled 484 boys and 102 girls from underprivileged backgrounds to gain entry into IITs nationwide, transforming tales of hardship into narratives of resilience, ambition, and social mobility.

Breaking the Cycle in Ahmednagar

For Sakshi Padir, securing a seat at IIT Delhi was an act of defiance. Raised in a small town where marriage at 18 was the expected norm, she chose a different path. With a total household income of just ?87,000 and a father employed in a modest private-sector role, she lived under the constant cloud of financial anxiety.

"I have been surviving without taking money from my parents since my second year," Sakshi shared. She managed essential expenses, such as laptop repairs, by using a friend's credit card and covering the debt through tutoring work. Her persistence yielded results. Sakshi has landed a position at Accenture with an annual salary of ?21.7 Lakhs-a transformative amount that will help her clear student loans and bolster her family's financial security.

"I want to be the support for others that I once received in the form of scholarships and guidance," says Sakshi, who plans to work as a product manager before eventually exploring entrepreneurship.

A Joint Family's Double Triumph

Akhshitha Laxmi Devi Rathod serves as another testament to the untapped potential within rural India. Raised in a large joint family where her father operates a small seed business, the financial pressure was immense: both Akhshitha and her brother defied the odds to secure admissions to IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee, respectively.

While having two children at IITs is a source of immense pride, it places a heavy financial strain on a small-business owner. For Akhshitha, the Yuva Unstoppable scholarship is more than just monetary aid; it is the "fillip" that allows her to concentrate on her IIT Delhi coursework and her upcoming role at Yes Bank in Mumbai, rather than worrying about her father's ability to fund the next semester.

Swati Shah, Head- Scholarships at Yuva Unstoppable, remarked, "Financial aid opens the door, but it is the mentorship and career guidance we provide that ensures our students walk through it with confidence. We are grateful to our donors who believe in the potential of these students and support them emotionally through this journey. "

A Vision for "Unstoppable" Leaders

These narratives are at the heart of Yuva Unstoppable's mission. The organization has supported over 7,000 merit scholars to date. Looking ahead, the group aims to significantly scale its impact by 2030, with a target of empowering 15,000 merit scholars. The program offers more than financial aid; it provides comprehensive support, including mentorship, career counseling, and professional development webinars. Notable success stories include alumni who have transitioned into roles as Medical Officers and Chartered Accountants at top-tier firms like PwC.

Amitabh Shah, Founder of Yuva Unstoppable, views these students as the architects of a Viksit Bharat. "A scholarship is more than a financial transaction; it is a vote of confidence that tells a young person their circumstances do not define their destination," remarked Amitabh. "By supporting students like Sakshi and Akhshitha, we are enabling a one-generation jump for entire families out of poverty. "

As these young women prepare to enter the corporate world at global leaders like Accenture and Yes Bank, they possess more than just a degree; they carry evidence that with the right support, no ambition is out of reach, regardless of one's small-town origins.
