Manipur: BSF constable killed in Ukhrul firing between village groups

Guwahati: A BSF constable was killed in Manipur's Ukhrul district on April 10 after being caught in firing between two armed village groups, officials said.

The violence was reported in the Litan area during the evening hours, when gunfire erupted between suspected Kuki-Zo members from Mongkot Chepu and Tangkhul Naga individuals from Shikibung. The exchange took place near Mongkot Chepu village at around 4:45 pm.

The deceased has been identified as Mithun Mandal of the Border Security Force's 170 Battalion, who was on duty when he was hit by a stray bullet.

At the time of the incident, he had been deployed for a road security operation. The gunfire left him with a serious injury to his shoulder.

After sustaining the injury, he was taken to a hospital in Imphal for treatment, but did not survive. Medical officials indicated that the bullet had caused severe internal damage.

An investigation has been initiated, and police have registered a case in connection with the firing. Security presence in the area has been intensified as authorities continue efforts to trace those responsible.

Post-mortem procedures are expected to be carried out after his body was moved to the hospital mortuary.

Condemning the killing, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh described the incident as deeply unfortunate. According to him, the constable lost his life in the line of duty after being hit by a bullet fired from an unidentified direction.

He further stated that Mandal, a native of Bhagjan Tola village in West Bengal, succumbed to his injuries around 6 pm despite receiving medical attention. The Chief Minister also acknowledged his service, noting his commitment and dedication.

Offering condolences, he said the government stands firmly with the bereaved family and will honour the sacrifice made by the personnel. He also reiterated the state's commitment to maintaining peace and stability.
