Manipur: Four arrested, arms and cash seized in anti-extortion operations

Imphal: In a series of coordinated operations against extortion-related violence, security forces in Manipur arrested four individuals, including active cadres of banned outfits, and recovered arms, ammunition and cash from different locations across Imphal East and Thoubal districts, police said on Friday.

Acting on an FIR related to firing at a residential gate in Tangkham Awang Leikai under Heingang police station limits in Imphal East on May 7, police arrested a juvenile on May 11. Subsequent interrogation led to the arrest of his associate, identified as Usham Roshan Singh alias Naobi (28) of Haraorou Awang Leikai, on May 12.

Police said investigation revealed that the duo was involved in firing incidents linked to extortion attempts targeting civilians in the area.

In a separate operation, security forces arrested an active cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibanganba group), identified as Khongbantabam Chinglemba Meitei alias Nanao (35) of Lamsang Lamdeng Khunou, from the Yairipok Lamkhai area under Thoubal police station.

In another development, Manipur Police arrested an active cadre of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei faction), identified as Hidangmayum Benerjit Sharma (24) of Yairipok Top Chingtha Mathak Leikai, from the Lilong Chajing area. The accused is involved in a bomb explosion case registered under Irilbung police station.

Police said three mobile phones, Rs 32,500 in cash, a UNLF(P) identity card, and a Mahindra Scorpio-N (unregistered) were seized from his possession.

Further investigation is underway.
