Imphal: The Manipur government, in coordination with the Airports Authority of India and Alliance Air, has initiated steps to improve regional air connectivity, including the early operationalisation of the Imphal-Silchar route and exploring the feasibility of linking Imphal with Dibrugarh.

A review meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary (Transport & TCI) Anurag Bajpai was held at the AAI project office at Imphal International Airport on Friday. It was attended by the Transport Director Khumanthem Diana Devi, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West Mayanglambam Rajkumar, Superintendent of Police (Imphal West), officials of AAI, and representatives from PWD, MSPDCL, CISF and the project team.

Officials also inspected the new cargo terminal and directed the project agency to complete installation of necessary machinery and begin operations by April 30, 2026. AAI was asked to expedite security clearances from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to make the facility operational.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the New Integrated Terminal Building, along with associated infrastructure including the apron, approach road from the National Highway, and power and water supply systems. Construction has resumed at full pace following delays attributed to conflict-related challenges, with overall physical progress currently at around 50%.

All concerned agencies were directed to adhere strictly to the timelines set during the previous review in December 2025 and complete all components, including the terminal building and supporting infrastructure, by December 31, 2026, in line with the Project Development Commitment.

The Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West and PWD officials were also asked to expedite the Social Impact Assessment process for land acquisition required for the approach road connecting the National Highway to the new terminal.

Emphasising the need for close inter-agency coordination, Bajpai stressed timely execution of the project and the importance of strengthening regional air connectivity.
