Imphal: The Government of Manipur on Thursday launched the "Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Manipur Fact Check" Facebook page and held a one-day awareness programme on existing welfare schemes in Imphal.
Secretary (IPR) Hungyo Worshang, IAS, inaugurated the page as Chief Guest, stating that it aims to verify and authenticate government orders, notices, and circulars to tackle the spread of misinformation. He stressed the increasing threat of false information in the digital space and called on media organisations to support initiatives that counter rumours.
Speaking to the media, Director (IPR) Th. Charanjeet Singh, MCS, emphasized the growing need for fact-checking in the age of artificial intelligence, where identifying genuine information has become more challenging.
He warned that misleading content can create confusion among the public and threaten peace and development.
He also informed that nodal officers will be appointed across departments to verify official documents before public release, in order to prevent misinformation and avoid potential unrest. Inputs from stakeholders have been invited to further strengthen the initiative.
The programme also included a media sensitization session focusing on welfare measures for journalists, such as the Journalist Pension Scheme, Welfare Scheme, and Press Identity Card accreditation.
