Guwahati: Meghalaya on Saturday (May 23) rolled out a set of major education sector initiatives in Tura, introducing digital governance tools for the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), launching the CM LEAD Fellowship, and deploying 27 official vehicles to improve on ground monitoring.
The vehicles were flagged off from the Matchakolgre LP School playground and assigned to School Education and Literacy Department officials, including District and Sub-Divisional School Education Officers. The move is aimed at strengthening supervision in remote and rural areas by improving field mobility.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma described the state's education system as one of the most complex in the Northeast due to its vast network of schools and teachers. He noted that while reforms have been challenging because of the scale, the government has continued structural interventions.
He further highlighted that the state has committed an additional Rs 215 crore annually to support SSA teachers, addressing long-standing concerns over pay and job security. According to him, the decision is intended to ensure dignity and financial stability, enabling teachers to access institutional credit and improve livelihood security.
Sangma also said Meghalaya now spends about Rs 3,500 crore annually on education and supports nearly 4,500 grant-in-aid institutions across the state. He added that improving education quality requires interventions at the individual student level rather than focusing only on overall pass percentages.
Despite the state achieving a record SSLC pass rate of 97.26 per cent this year, he emphasised that reforms must go deeper than examination outcomes. "The focus has to shift to micro-level improvements, reaching every student," he said.
The initiative also included the rollout of two MBOSE digital platforms, the E-Office Management System and an Accounting System Software designed to enhance administrative efficiency, transparency, and accountability in education governance.
Officials said these systems are expected to simplify processes and improve coordination among stakeholders, including students, teachers, and parents.
In addition, the government announced the CM LEAD Fellowship programme, aimed at strengthening classroom instruction and improving education management across nearly 8,000 government and aided schools in the state.
Education Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri said the administration has been working on a structured pay framework to ensure long-term financial stability and security for teachers across Meghalaya.
