Aizawl: Mizoram's ruling party, Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), on Monday released its candidate list for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls slated for April 21.
Similarly, the state Congress also released the full list of its candidates for the municipal polls. Earlier, Congress had announced names of candidates for 13 seats.
The ZPM and Congress will contest all 19 seats. Apart from announcing their candidates, both parties also launched election campaigns and released manifestos on Monday.
The main opposition, Mizo National Front (MNF), has already declared the names of 19 candidates for the upcoming polls. The BJP is yet to release its candidate list.
Polling for the 19-member AMC will be held on April 21, with counting of votes scheduled for April 27.
The last date for filing nomination papers is March 25, while candidates can withdraw their nominations by March 30. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on March 27.
Although the municipality's current term expired on March 1, the State Election Commission (SEC) delayed the elections due to several overlapping administrative priorities.
Over 2.37 lakh electors, including 1.28 lakh female voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the AMC polls, according to the SEC. In the last AMC polls held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority with 11 seats, followed by the ZPM with six and the Congress with two.
