Guwahati: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Nagaland State Branch, is preparing to observe World Red Cross Day on May 8 with a large-scale public outreach programme titled "Walk for Humanity," in line with this year's global theme, "United for Humanity."
The day commemorates the 198th birth anniversary of Jean Henri Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
World Red Cross Day is marked globally to honour Dunant's vision and to recognise the dedicated humanitarian efforts of Red Cross volunteers who work tirelessly during conflicts, natural disasters, and emergencies.
Highlighting the importance of this year's theme, IRCS Nagaland officials, led by General Secretary Akhale Khamo, stated during a press briefing that "United for Humanity" reflects the need for unity in addressing growing global challenges, including violence and attacks against humanitarian workers. The theme also aims to counter rising dehumanising narratives by reminding society that both aid workers and those they serve are individuals, not mere statistics.
Breaking away from traditional indoor observances, the state branch has chosen to organise a "Walk for Humanity" to encourage greater public involvement and visibility.
The event has received support from several organisations, including the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, the Nagaland Voluntary Blood Donors Association, the Kohima Village Youth Organisation, and health-focused NGOs such as Kripa Foundation and the Family Planning Association of India.
Organisers emphasised that the initiative goes beyond symbolism and is intended to launch a wider campaign promoting humanitarian awareness and volunteerism. Santu Thapa, Joint Secretary of the IRCSN Kohima Branch, noted that while the Red Cross has served Nagaland for over 30 years, collective participation is essential to strengthen its impact.
The campaign will also focus on enrolling new volunteers and expanding membership, encouraging citizens to actively contribute to relief operations, blood donation drives, and emergency response efforts.
