Nagaland: NSDMA warns against unverified weather advisories, flags misleading map

Nagaland: NSDMA warns against unverified weather advisories, flags misleading map

NORTHEAST NOW 1 month ago

Dimapur: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority on Monday cautioned citizens against creating, sharing, or forwarding unverified weather-related information, following the circulation of a misleading advisory on social media.

In a public notice, NSDMA secretary Sentiwapang Aier urged residents to rely only on official updates disseminated through verified government channels. The advisory came after a graphic titled "Nagaland Weather Advisory: March 25-29" was widely circulated online, using NSDMA data but presenting an inaccurately generated district map.

According to the authority, while the weather information in the graphic appeared to be sourced from official data, the accompanying map and visual representation were incorrect, leading to a misleading depiction of affected areas.

The NSDMA clarified that the map did not reflect its official assessment or communication and warned that the spread of altered or unofficial weather content, including inaccurate maps or graphics issued in its name amounts to misinformation.

Officials noted that such misleading material could create confusion about risk zones and hamper public preparedness during adverse weather conditions.

For reliable and real-time updates, the authority advised citizens to use official platforms, including the "Safer Nagaland" mobile application, and to strictly avoid sharing unverified information.
