Dibrugarh: Saptaranga Cultural Society of Canada is set to organise its first Northeast Cultural Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 30, 2026, with the aim of showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northeast India on a global platform.
Announcing the initiative, Indrajit Guha, president of the society, said the festival seeks to introduce Canadian audiences to the region's vibrant traditions while creating opportunities for artists from the Northeast to perform internationally.
"We want to showcase the rich cultural traditions of Northeast India in Canada. This platform will allow people here to experience the diversity of the region, while also giving artists from the Northeast an opportunity to present their talent on a global stage," Guha said.
He added that the Saptaranga Cultural Society was formed with the objective of promoting artists from Northeast India and providing them with wider exposure. "People in Canada are keen to experience the cultural richness of the Northeast, and we are eager to welcome artists from the region," he said.
Guha noted that representing the Northeast means reflecting the diversity of all eight states-Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, each with its own distinct cultural identity.
Originally from Dibrugarh in Assam and now based in Canada, Guha said the initiative stems from a personal commitment to promote the region's heritage. "Northeast is a land of immense diversity, where multiple cultures coexist, each with its own unique identity. I have always wanted to contribute towards showcasing this richness," he said.
Founded by members of the Northeastern diaspora, the Vancouver-based non-profit organisation aims to act as a cultural bridge, connecting the traditions of the "Seven Sisters and one Brother" with audiences in Canada.
The festival will highlight a wide spectrum of artistic expressions from the region, ranging from classical dance forms such as Sattriya and Manipuri to indigenous folk traditions, music and cuisine. Organisers say the event will offer a multi-sensory experience, celebrating both the traditional and contemporary aspects of Northeast India.
Through initiatives like this, the society hopes to create sustained global platforms for artists, particularly those from remote areas, enabling them to present their work beyond regional boundaries and gain international recognition.
