NORTHEAST NOW 2 weeks ago

Agartala: Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) jointly recovered 55,626 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup valued at about Rs 1.27 crore from Agartala Railway Station, officials said on Thursday.

The recovery was made during a joint operation launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs regarding the suspected movement of a consignment through the railway network, they said.

According to officials, the security personnel intercepted the suspected consignment at the railway station and conducted a search, during which the bottles of codeine-based cough syrup were recovered. The consignment was allegedly meant for illegal transportation.

Following the operation, the recovered contraband was handed over to the DRI in Agartala for further investigation and initiation of legal action under the relevant provisions of law, officials said.

They said the operation was part of coordinated efforts by enforcement agencies to check the trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances through transit routes in the Northeast.

Officials did not disclose the destination of the consignment or whether any person had been detained in connection with the recovery.

Further investigation is in progress to trace the origin of the consignment, establish its intended destination and identify those involved in the alleged smuggling operation, officials said.
