Venezuela has plunged into seven days of national mourning after the devastating twin earthquakes of June 24 claimed 2,295 lives, according to the latest official update.
The announcement underscores the sheer scale of the disaster, which has left thousands injured and displaced across the country.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez revealed that more than 11,000 people have been injured, while rescue teams have pulled over 6,400 survivors to safety. With 25 temporary camps now operational, spread across La Guaira, Caracas, Miranda, Carabobo and Yaracuy, the government is racing to provide shelter and relief.
Over 4,000 domestic and international rescue workers remain on the ground, coordinating efforts to aid affected families.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, in a statement shared on social media, declared the mourning period beginning Wednesday evening. "In honour of the victims, I have decided to decree National Mourning for seven days. Venezuela's soul is torn by the human losses caused by the devastating earthquakes," she said.
Authorities also reported 782 aftershocks since June 24, though their frequency and intensity have declined. Relief operations continue as the nation grapples with one of its worst natural disasters in recent memory.
