30 Women Accuse French Singer-Actor of Rape & Sexual Violence

30 Women Accuse French Singer-Actor of Rape & Sexual Violence

Odisha Bhaskar 3 days ago

French singer-actor Patrick Bruel's glittering career has been overshadowed by a major scandal, as he was formally charged with rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment by a Nanterre court on Wednesday.

The charges, confirmed by prosecutors, involve nine women and span incidents alleged to have occurred between 2010 and 2019 across France, Switzerland, and Belgium.

Bruel, 67, spent 48 hours in custody before appearing in court dressed in a black sweater and grey jeans, visibly fatigued. Prosecutors sought his pre-trial detention, but the judge released him under judicial supervision. His lawyer, Fanny Colin, said Bruel would cooperate fully with the judicial process.

The investigation, which began with three complaints dating back to 1997, 2000, and 2001, widened as more women came forward. Belgian authorities recently notified French prosecutors of a 2010 Brussels case. In total, around 30 women have publicly accused Bruel, with allegations reported by outlets including Mediapart, Elle, RTL, and RTBF.

Among key accusers are Daniela Elstner of Unifrance, who alleges assault in 1997, and French TV presenter Flavie Flament, who claims Bruel raped her in 1991 when she was a minor. Bruel has denied all accusations, insisting last month on Instagram: "I have never forced a woman."
