In what might be one of the most underwhelming crime sprees in recent memory, New York police are hunting Gustavo DeJesus Torres, 33, who allegedly robbed six banks in five days, netting a grand total of just $605 (Rs 56,683).
Torres kicked off his spree at a Chase Bank, handing over a threatening note. But his "career" quickly turned into a comedy of errors. At one branch in Harlem, he walked away with only $20. Other attempts yielded nothing at all. His biggest "success" was $320 from Jackson Heights, followed by $265 in Brooklyn.
Security cameras captured Torres looking more like a regular commuter than a criminal, with coffee cup in hand, headphones on, between failed heists. Police say he is the same man arrested in 2021 for robbing a Chase branch in New Jersey, and linked to a $600 TD Bank robbery in Manhattan last year.
Despite his lack of fortune, Torres remains on the run. Authorities are combing through footage and urging vigilance, while the public is left marveling at a crime spree that cost more effort than it ever paid back.
