Mumbai: Nearly two and half decades after Lagaan redefined sports dramas in Indian cinema, actor Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker are reportedly teaming up again, this time to tell the real-life story of cricket legend Lala Amarnath.
According to Pinkvilla, the duo is developing a large-scale biographical drama tracing Amarnath's rise during the turbulent partition era. Known as the first Indian batter to score a Test century, Amarnath remains an iconic figure whose journey blends sporting triumph with the emotional and political upheaval of his time.
The project is said to be in advanced stages, with Gowariker shaping the screenplay and narrative. Reports suggest the film will emphasize authenticity, period detailing, and extensive pre-production before cameras roll. Creative inputs have also come from filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi, both long-time collaborators of Aamir Khan.
If timelines hold, the untitled film is expected to go on floors around September 2026. The reunion of Khan and Gowariker has already sparked excitement among fans, who still recall the cultural impact of Lagaan. With cricket, history, and drama at its core, the film promises to be another landmark in Indian cinema.
