Airstrikes Devastate Iran's Space Program, Satellite Facilities

Iran's ambitious space program, one of the most advanced in the Middle East, has suffered extensive damage following coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes, raising concerns that Tehran may now lean more heavily on China and Russia for support.

According to experts, the strikes targeted key infrastructure for satellites and rockets, including facilities run by the Defense Ministry and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These organizations are responsible for both space launch vehicles (SLVs) and ballistic missiles, making them prime targets. "They're going to get mowed down," said Jim Lamson of King's College London, noting the overlap between Iran's civilian and military programs.

Recent attacks destroyed a command center for the Russian-made Khayyam satellite and a compound in Tehran linked to anti-satellite weapons. Other facilities hit include the Iran Space Agency's main research center and IRGC rocket assembly sites.

Critics argue Iran's SLV technology could shorten the timeline for developing intercontinental ballistic missiles. US officials say the strikes aim to prevent Iran from gaining orbital capabilities.

While Russia retains control of the Khayyam satellite, analysts believe Iran's ability to build and launch its own systems is now severely weakened. Experts predict Tehran will increasingly depend on Moscow and Beijing for advanced satellite and rocket technology.
