Bhadrak: In a swift anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an Assistant Section Officer of the Income Tax Department in Odisha's Bhadrak district while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000.
The accused, identified as Ramesh Mohanty, was caught red-handed during a trap laid by the central agency. According to officials, Mohanty had allegedly demanded the money from a complainant to delete a duplicate PAN card record. Acting on the complaint, CBI sleuths set up a sting and apprehended him as he accepted the cash.
Following the arrest, investigators searched the Income Tax office at Charampa, Bhadrak, seizing documents and records linked to the case. Officials said the probe will focus on establishing whether the officer was involved in wider irregularities.
