Fragile Truce Emerges in Qatar, US-Iran Talks Unlock Frozen Assets

Fragile Truce Emerges in Qatar, US-Iran Talks Unlock Frozen Assets

Odisha Bhaskar 3 months ago

In a rare breakthrough amid decades of mistrust, indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran wrapped up in Qatar this week with tangible progress.

Both sides agreed to partially unlock Iran's frozen assets and establish a new dispute communication channel, moves hailed as confidence-building steps before tackling thornier nuclear issues.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who led his delegation, confirmed the successful completion of talks focused on honouring a recent memorandum of understanding. A portion of Iran's six billion dollars in restricted funds will now be released for purchasing essential domestic goods, offering much-needed economic relief.

Beyond financial concessions, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz dominated discussions. The strategic waterway, which carries nearly 20 percent of global oil and LNG trade, has long been a flashpoint. While commercial shipping has resumed, lingering unpredictability continues to unsettle energy markets. Tehran also pressed for recognition of its territorial authority over the channel.

Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan kept delegations in separate rooms to ease dialogue. US Vice President JD Vance stressed that current talks prioritize shipping safety over immediate nuclear disarmament, with broader restrictions to be addressed later.

Qatari officials praised the cautious optimism, noting both nations plan to resume talks after the July 9 burial of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hoping to sustain this fragile truce and avert military escalation.
