ISKCON Faces Fresh Backlash Over Untimely Rath Yatra Abroad

Odisha Bhaskar 6 days ago

Puri: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has once again stirred controversy by hosting Rath Yatra celebrations outside the traditional calendar, drawing sharp criticism from temple authorities in Puri.

Grand processions are being staged overseas under different names. Dallas, Texas is celebrating the "Festival of Joy," while Brisbane, Australia is holding the "Festival of Chariot." Both events are scheduled for April 18, despite repeated objections from Srimandir officials and stakeholders.

Arabinda Padhee, Chief Administrator of Srimandir, confirmed that concerns had earlier been conveyed to ISKCON through Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb. "Such untimely Rath Yatras are unacceptable, whether in India or abroad," he said, stressing that notices had been issued in the past but ignored.

The issue has prompted Gajapati Maharaja to convene a review meeting with officials, where it was revealed that ISKCON has conducted Rath Yatra at nearly 80 locations outside India, alongside Snana Yatra at around 10 places.

Temple authorities argue that these out-of-season festivities dilute the sanctity of the rituals, which are deeply tied to Jagannath tradition and its prescribed schedule. Despite repeated warnings, ISKCON's global celebrations remain a flashpoint, reigniting debate over religious authenticity and cultural propriety.
