The Maharashtra government has begun the process of framing a Maharashtra-specific UCC, with an expert committee to be constituted soon to study existing laws and draft the proposal.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the committee's formation will be announced during the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly, likely next week. He reiterated that the UCC aligns with the Directive Principles of State Policy, echoing Dr BR Ambedkar's vision of equality in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

The move follows Uttarakhand's pioneering adoption of a UCC, which Maharashtra plans to study closely. States like Gujarat and Assam have also expressed support for similar reforms.

While Congress leader Sachin Sawant urged broad consultations to ensure inclusivity, Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande welcomed the initiative, calling it part of the party's long-standing ideological alignment with the BJP on national reforms.

If implemented, Maharashtra could emerge as the next state to advance the long-debated goal of a common civil framework for all citizens.
