Odisha Battles Wildfires Across 130 Forests, Control Room Set

Odisha Bhaskar 2 weeks ago

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is reeling under a wave of forest fires, with blazes reported in more than 130 locations across the state and no signs of relief yet.

Significant outbreaks have been recorded in Karlapat of Kalahandi South Division and several protected ranges, while flames continue to spread through Paralakhemundi, Mohana, Chitrakonda, Rayagada, and Udayagiri ranges. Other affected areas include Gudari, Muniguda, Balugaon, Raigarh, Kharial, Muribahal, Deogarh, Kuchinda, and Madanpur-Rampur ranges.

Authorities warn the fires pose a grave threat to wildlife and conservation efforts, especially as Odisha enters peak fire season lasting until May. To combat the crisis, the Forest Department has established 20,461 km of fire lines and deployed 334 fire protection squads across territorial and wildlife divisions.

A dedicated Forest Control Room has also been set up, with helpline number 18003457158 for real-time reporting. A new standard operating procedure has been issued to strengthen coordination at divisional and circle levels.

Officials say these measures aim to minimize damage and safeguard Odisha's biodiversity during this critical period, as teams work tirelessly to contain the flames and protect vulnerable habitats.
