PM Modi Gifts Odisha's Palm-leaf Pattachitra to Norway's Queen

PM Modi Gifts Odisha's Palm-leaf Pattachitra to Norway's Queen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted India's artistic heritage during his recent diplomatic outreach to Norway, presenting Queen Sonja with a traditional Tala Pattachitra, an exquisite palm-leaf engraving from Odisha.

The gesture underscored India's centuries-old craftsmanship while weaving cultural diplomacy into global engagement.

Unlike cloth-based Pattachitra paintings, Tala Pattachitra is etched on specially treated palm leaves from the Palmyra tree. Artisans prepare the leaves with turmeric and neem to preserve them, then dry them under the sun.

Using a fine iron stylus called a lekhani, they carve delicate lines into the stiff surface. Lampblack or kohl is rubbed into the grooves to reveal intricate designs, often enhanced with natural mineral and vegetable pigments.

The foldable panels combine storytelling, calligraphy, and sacred iconography, narrating epics from Indian mythology with extraordinary precision. Generations of Odisha's artisans have preserved this tradition, making it one of the state's most revered crafts.

Modi's five-nation tour between May 15 and 20 also included the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, and Italy. In Rome, India and Italy elevated ties to a Special Strategic Partnership, setting a €20-billion trade target by 2029 and advancing cooperation on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
