Chandigarh: In a major relief for consumers, the Punjab government has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs across households, shops, and industries starting April 1. The move, described by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as "historic," comes on top of the existing scheme that provides 300 units of free electricity per month to domestic households.
According to the new rates, domestic consumers will see a cut of Rs 1.50 per unit, while shop owners will benefit from a reduction of 79 paise per unit. Industrial units will pay 74 paise less per unit, and electric vehicle (EV) charging will be fixed at Rs 5 per unit.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who had promised affordable electricity during his campaign, rolled out the free power scheme soon after taking office in 2022. The latest tariff cut is expected to ease financial pressure on families and businesses, while also encouraging EV adoption in the state.
