Keonjhar: Odisha police launched a sweeping crackdown on illegal sand trade in Keonjhar district on Monday, raiding multiple locations linked to alleged sand mafia operators.

The coordinated operation spanned areas under Anandapur, Ghasipura, and Nandipada police stations, striking at the heart of the illicit network.

Officials said simultaneous raids were carried out at seven sites, leading to the seizure of Rs 25 lakh in cash, over 30 vehicles, and the detention of more than 12 individuals for questioning. Residences of several suspects were searched, including that of Hatadihi block vice-chairman and BJD State Secretary Ratikanta Rout, though police have not disclosed findings from his premises.

Investigators confirmed that several individuals involved in illegal sand transportation and trade were interrogated during the raids.

Police said the crackdown is part of a larger drive to dismantle the sand mafia's operations in the region, with further action expected.
