The shocking incident, which unfolded on July 6, has drawn sharp condemnation from both the ruling Shiv Sena and its ally BJP, with leaders promising strict action.

In the viral video, Mhatre is seen striking a woman doctor from behind, causing her phone to fall, before he and his supporters attacked other staff members. The assault reportedly followed an altercation over the treatment of a pregnant woman. When confronted by NDTV, Mhatre denied hitting the doctor, claiming he only tried to "slap her phone away." He has refused to apologise.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam assured a probe, stating: "Assaulting doctors is wrong. If someone has an issue, they must report it instead of taking the law into their hands."

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's son and Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, himself a doctor, condemned the attack, calling it "highly condemnable" and praising medical staff for their service under stressful conditions. Health Minister Prakash Abitkar and BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar also criticised Mhatre, stressing that violence against doctors cannot be tolerated.

The incident has sparked widespread anger, with demands for accountability and disciplinary action against the corporator.
