Mumbai: Barely three months after leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup crown, Suryakumar Yadav's tenure as T20I captain appears to be ending.
Sources told NDTV that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to remove the star batter from the leadership role, with his place in the squad also under review. The move comes ahead of India's upcoming tours of Ireland and England later this month.
The decision, insiders say, is part of a long-term plan to build a team for the 2028 T20 World Cup. Yadav's dip in form has weighed heavily on selectors. His average has slipped to 25.88 since taking charge in July 2024, compared to a robust 43.60 before captaincy. In the 2026 IPL, he managed just 270 runs in 13 innings at 20.76.
Despite guiding India to the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup, Yadav's declining numbers have raised concerns. The BCCI's Apex Council Committee is scheduled to meet online Thursday, though it remains unclear if the captaincy issue will be formally discussed.
The development signals a shift in focus toward grooming fresh leadership as India looks to sustain dominance in the shortest format.
