A suspected scrub typhus outbreak has sparked concern in Sanabagadari village under Pabitrapur Gram Panchayat in Odisha's Anugola district, with one reported death and more than 15 people affected.
According to local sources, several villagers developed symptoms including fever and severe headaches over the past few days. Many of them reportedly suspected insect bites while carrying out routine activities in and around the village.
The situation came to light after the affected residents underwent medical examinations. Subsequent tests reportedly confirmed scrub typhus, a bacterial infection transmitted through the bite of infected chigger mites.
Panic has gripped the village following the reported death of Samunt Sethi, who is suspected to have succumbed to the infection. The incident has heightened fears among residents amid concerns over a possible rise in cases.
Villagers have urged the authorities to step up medical support, surveillance and preventive measures to contain the spread of the disease.
The administration said it is closely monitoring the situation and tracking those affected. Officials have assured that necessary steps are being taken to prevent further transmission and safeguard public health.
