Odisha Bhaskar 3 weeks ago

Bengaluru: The capital city of Karnataka was battered by torrential rain and gale-force winds on Wednesday, April 30, leaving at least 10 people dead and triggering widespread chaos across India's tech capital.

The Bengaluru city recorded 111 mm of rainfall by 8.30 am, surpassing its previous high of 108.6 mm set in 2001. The worst tragedy struck Bowring Hospital, where a compound wall collapsed amid the downpour, killing seven people including two tourists from Kerala and a six-year-old girl, and injuring seven others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, announcing Rs 2 lakh compensation for each victim's family and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site, promising Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved families and free treatment for survivors, while reprimanding officials for negligence.

Three more deaths were reported in separate rain-related incidents: two men electrocuted in Shivajinagar and Bannerghatta Road, and another killed when his house collapsed in Chamarajpet.

The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for "very heavy rainfall." Trees were uprooted, traffic snarled, and roads in MG Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, and BTM Layout turned into streams, with water levels rising up to three feet in low-lying areas.
