Lucknow: In a twist that sounds more like classroom irony than exam statistics, over 62,000 working teachers in Uttar Pradesh have failed in the Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026. It was the exam meant to certify their ability to teach.
While lakhs of fresh aspirants celebrated success, thousands of chalk-wielding veterans were left staring at the blackboard of failure.
The overall results looked impressive. At at the primary level, 5.71 lakh of 7.13 lakh candidates cleared the test, recording a pass percentage of 80.07%. At the upper-primary level, 7.59 lakh of 10.57 lakh candidates qualified, with a 71.85% success rate. In total, more than 13.3 lakh candidates passed.
But among the 2.68 lakh working teachers who appeared, 62,028 failed. At the primary level, 76.29% managed to qualify, while at the upper-primary level, 77.45% scraped through.
These teachers had been teaching without clearing TET, until the Supreme Court ruled the exam mandatory for continued service. The court has set August 31, 2028 as the deadline, giving those who failed another chance or risk termination.
For now, the irony remains sharp as teachers who test students daily have themselves failed the test of eligibility.
